In addition to his 15-year run at ABC News, Cordtz wrote for a number of newspapers over his lengthy career in journalism, including the Wall Street Journal where he mainly covered politics in the 1960s. ABC News hired him in 1974 to be their economics editor.

“What I care most about is that I think I’ve contributed in a fairly important way to helping all the folks watching TV understand the way the economy of this country works,” Cordtz said in the Washington Journalism Review profile, “and I think I’ve managed to persuade some of the skeptics within TV that it can be done.”

Cordtz left ABC in 1989 and became chief correspondent and later managing editor of Financial World magazine. When Financial World shut down, he moved to Florida, where he worked as a freelancer for publications including the St. Petersburg Times, the Tampa Tribune, the Miami Herald, Florida Trendmagazine and the South Florida Daily Business Review.

He split time between Florida and New Mexico from 2003 to 2016, before making New Mexico his full-time home in 2016.

In Addition to Kay Cordtz, Dan Cordtz is reportedly survived by another daughter, Wendy Eaton of New York; son Jeffrey Dan Cordtz of Atlanta; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
