Hearst TV Stations Raise $4 Million For Harvey Relief

TV ownership groups and TV networks alike have spent much of their broadcast days this week raising money for victims of Hurricane Harvey.

Among them, Hearst Television which doesn’t have any stations in Texas and still raised $4.1 million from viewers in other markets.

Hearst’s KCRA-TV in Sacramento alone raised more than $750,000, while WCVB-TV in Boston raised more than a half million dollars, each in less than 24 hours.

“We couldn’t be more grateful to our viewers and colleagues who have come to the aid of the thousands of flood victims in Texas and the border gulf regions with extraordinary generosity,” said Jordan Wertlieb, Hearst Television president in a statement. “We are proud of the broadcasters and local media who have been on the forefront informing Americans of this crisis as it developed and who have raised millions of dollars for relief efforts. Once again, the local media industry has shown itself to be a vital resource and partner to communities in crisis.”

Hearst Television’s sister company, Hearst Newspapers, owns the Houston Chronicle and the Beaumont Enterprise, among other Texas newspapers. Proceed benefit American Red Cross programs in Texas and Louisiana.

ABC/Disney’s DayofGiving, which began Wednesday, and has included a company-wide effort on national, local and cable entities has raised $14.2 million so far.
