W+K, Old Spice Go Windsurfing With Crews, Mustafa

By Erik Oster

W+K Portland continues the Terry Crews versus Isaiah Mustafa mayhem it started with “And So It Begins” with its latest spot for Old Spice, which continues to pit the two spokesmen against each other as representatives of fragrances Bearglove and Timber.

The 30-second spot, entitled “Windsurfing,” begins with Mustafa in a bathroom and a voiceover: “Warning, ignore all Old Spice commercials except this one.” Crews comes crashing through the set and from there things just get more surreal and self-referential. He tells Mustafa that this is his commercial, but Isaiah provides strong evidence to the contrary. Like the previous effort, “Checkmate,” it appears that Mustafa triumphs this time out, making Crews do for a win next time. “Windsurfing” is the fifth effort in the campaign, and while the two pitchmen approach still shows some promise, the premise is also starting to wear a little thin. As with previous efforts, the online version ends with a call to viewers to “Make a Smellmitment” and choose between Bearglove and Timber. With only a couple of spots to go we have to wonder if the campaign is building towards some kind of big conclusion and if there’s a way to conclude the showdown without declaring a winner, or if there’s a way to keep the two pitchmen battling.
