Illinois Anchor Dies of Brain Cancer

By Kevin Eck

Dave Benton, the Champaign, Illinois anchor who said he would work as long as he could after he told viewers his brain cancer had returned, has died.

“It is with great sadness that we tell you this,” WCIA wrote on its facebook page. “Our friend Dave Benton died this morning at his home. He was surrounded by family and went peacefully. Dave battled brain cancer and showed the world how to face death with bravery and grace. We will miss him very much.”

Benton stopped anchoring the station’s morning show in April. At the time he told viewers, “Thank you for all your support, prayers and well wishes. It’s been an interesting year and a half. My goal was to be in the anchor seat and do a good job. I hope I’ve done that. Now, it’s time for the next step.”
