Community Book Exchange in UK Phone Booth Shut Down by Telecom

Locals in Banbury, UK have a great system for trading books. They built some shelves in an old telephone booth and started a book exchange, not a bad use of space.

But BT, the British telecom that owns the phone booth, is not amused. The company has order the community to shut down its book box, fearing that someone might get hurt in the phone booth. “We understand the good intentions behind the book exchange,” read a note posted in the box by BT. “We are however concerned the books and shelving could cause injury if they were to fall.”

Locals have taken to Twitter to fight back against BT uniting with the hashtag #SaveOurPhoneBoxLibrary and have been garnering global support. One Twitter user expressed support for the box and shared photos of a similar project in Argentina.
